How well do Garden Mats weather the winter.. in the case of planting garlic around this time of the year? I assume the mats would stay out there..

    • Peter Comart says:

Garden Mats weather the winter just fine. We plant our garlic in October and leave our “garlic” mat out over the winter. We only pull it up to harvest in July. We usually till manure in right after we harvest, put our mat back down and leave it until we plant again in October. We have found that the mats we leave out year round last about 5 – 7 years, which is pretty good. Whereas, the mats we pick up every fall last about 8 – 10 years.

Thanks.. that is helpful. Quick suggestion: Add this info to your website.. also the email link on your website does not seem to work correctly. In any case, I am going to try Garden Mats in the future. I planted my garlic bulbs already this year, but we will give it a go next spring.

It is feedback like yours that keeps us going and growing!!! We now have 3,000 feet of gardens under cover and we didn’t weed four hours all season. We have much better things to do with our time. We read, hiked, biked, kayaked, camped and traveled instead. Garden Mats gave us our summers back.

Hi Peter, What mat did you use for the artichokes? And did you start them early and transplant? Or try to over winter them?

I swear by my garden mats! I’ve had them for 5 years now. Some are getting weaker and may need to be replaced soon, but they are amazing!! We moved and I have a new garden, but I had to “hand mow” so much of it the weeds and grass were so long. I can’t wait to mark it all out in the Spring with my mats and I got my garlic in yesterday. This is certainly my mat that stays out the longest. So, that is a huge relief that it is in the ground.
I tell everyone I meet about garden mats. Thank you!!!

  9. Barbara says:

Do the mats in which you groom ground vegetables (like beets and carrots) need to be lifted to harvest?

    • Peter Comart says:

Most of the time you harvest from top. Yet we have had some beets and onions so large where it was best to lift up a side and harvest from underneath. You’ll see.
